Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Problem with Forever written by Jennifer L. Brief Summary of Book: The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just as the film depicts, King Louis XVI took over seven years before he could father his first-born in what the French populace branded a case of ‘tight foreskin.’ The costumes used in the film accurately depict the costumes that Marie Antoinette sported during her days. Historically, Marie’s marriage plunged into squabbles soon after tying the knot, probably due to the tender age at which she married. True to the movie, Marie Antoinette became the Queen of France at the age of 15 years. ![]() Norma Shearer tried to incorporate some historical accuracies and inaccuracies in the film to suit her agenda.Īs aforementioned, to some extent, the film is historically accurate. This film cuts across Marie Antoinette’s youth, marriage, trials and tribulations as a queen and her ultimate maturity coupled with loyalty that took her to prison and finally to grave, standing beside her estranged husband, King Louis XVI. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, I know it was the 1970s, but Varley spent far too much time dreaming up alien sexual characteristics, and far too much of this novel details inter-species sex. (The other members of the NASA crew, who are presumably still alive and still on Gaea, are never once mentioned.) Two new characters in this vein are introduced (one of whom is an insufferable straw feminist) and most of the book details a voyage around Gaea’s circumference with these two, Cirocco, Gaby, and a bunch of the stupid centaur aliens. ![]() Gaea is now inhabited by a number of humans as well, who have come to settle and explore and – in the case of a few pilgrims – implore Gaea to cure what ails them. It was apparent that some of Gaea’s autonomous sub-brains were rebelling against her, but I still didn’t find it particularly clear as to what the Wizard does or why Gaea needed one. At the end of that novel the former captain, Cirocco, was granted immortality in exchange for acting as Gaea’s “Wizard” – a sort of agent or ambassador. ![]() Wizard picks up about a hundred years after the events of Titan, in which a NASA expedition discovers an intelligent, godlike alien the size of a planet and the shape of a torus habitat in orbit around Saturn, with lots of other alien species living on it. Show More OCD means I have to read Demon as well now. ![]() ![]() The narrative in The Cipher head-hops a bit from one character to another. I find Koja’s style a bit jarring and disorienting at times. Some of the stories, like “Baby,” really worked for me, and some of them didn’t. I’ve read a few short stories in her collection Velocities, also released by Meerkat Press this year. This is not my first time reading Koja’s work. The mystery of their relationship was as fascinating to me as the affectionately named “Funhole.” Obsession, as we all know, does not end well, and horrible things do happen mostly because Nakota is self-destructive, impulsive, and a bit of an emotional “black hole” herself. ![]() They happen upon a strange, black hole in Nicholas’s apartment building and become obsessed with experimenting with it. ![]() In Kathe Koja’s The Cipher, Nicholas and Nakota are pretty loathsome people. ![]() I don’t need to like people in order to emotionally invest in their stories - sometimes, hating them is just as fun as loving them. ![]() I think protagonists should be as varied as the people we encounter in real life. There’s kind of this unofficial debate among readers concerning those who enjoy unlikable characters and those who need protagonists to be tolerable in order to invest in their story. Reviewed by Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann ![]() ![]() ![]() It's not romantic in the least, it makes the relationship unbalanced. owned - is creepy, and needy, and not at all what I'd expect from Dex. Now, Dex is simply bionic, and he's lost pretty much everything that made him vulnerable in the first place. One of the things about Dex and Sloane was that they were so different, and Dex's human vulnerabilities made missions for him actually dangerous. The decision to make Dex half human was such a jump the shark moment. I think she's gone off the rails, and is the perfect example of what happens when a series goes on for too long. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?ĭisappointment. He hasn't bothered me before, but I had to stop and re-start over multiple days because I could only handle his narration for 10 minutes, tops. ![]() The narration is so awful that it sounds like it's being read by a 1940's B-Movie villain. This is actually why I gave it such a bad review. Would you listen to another book narrated by Mark Westfield? By going where she did with Dex, she's pretty much cut out the danger factor in his missions. This would have been more enjoyable had she not blatantly ripped of True Blood with the marked storyline. Indeed, he has received strong bipartisan support for it, and a strong consensus is developing in the American body politic that China represents a threat to America. The president has divided America on all his policies, except one: his trade and technological war against China. Although President Donald Trump launched the first round in 2018, it will outlast his administration. It’s a breezy read about the history of women’s rights, and can serve as a springboard from which to dive more deeply into these movements. I appreciated that it incorporates the most recent hot issues in contemporary feminism, such as trans rights, disability rights, and even mentions the flaws in so-called “corporate feminism”. It strives for a nuanced tone, acknowledgidng the setbacks in the movements, and the fact that some figures were not without their controversies. Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists: A Graphic History of Women’s Fight for Their Rights We rated this book: 19.99 This book sets out to provide an outline of primarily women’s rights by outlining prevailing laws throughout history, events that influenced women’s rights, and the personalities that publicly advocated for their rights. Although it takes a US-centric point of view, it makes an effort to touch on historical figures from Asia and Africa. This book is a survey of different movements and prominent figures in history, and doesn’t go into detail about any one subject. The tone of the book is didactic and lightweight, even as it tries to honor the complexity of the subject matter. Yes and no. I tend to find either the writing being outdated or the story being too clichéd already by now. The reason for my reluctance in reading Riftwar Saga is that I don’t often gel well with fantasy books written pre 1990.
